It’s unlikely that anybody in the industry needs three anonymous Reuters sources to tell them that NetWare has been the donkey on the bridge holding up the sale of Novell for lo the six months the company’s been in play. Everybody has known for years and years that that thing has been an albatross around Novell’s neck. Heck, if Novell had been able to solve its NetWare problem it wouldn’t have bought SUSE Linux.

Who is buying Novell? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that VMware is in talks to acquire Novell's Linux software unit. Novell, adds the Journal, is in "advanced talks with at least two buyers." VMware's primary interest would be in purchasing Novell's SUSE Linux operating system business, experts agree.

Who's kidding whom? Oracle co-president Chuck Phillips was fired. Not only is that utterly obvious through the thin veneer of the "resignation" twaddle Oracle handed out but a source proverbially close to the situation says he was asked for his resignation on Saturday. Reportedly Phillips was sandbagged, gulled into believing that ex-HP CEO Mark Hurd was going to come into Oracle as some kind of triumvir alongside him and his fellow president Safra Catz until he was unceremoniously pushed out, stunned to hear Oracle say that he had asked to leave in December and was importuned to stay through the Sun integration. "Asked," huh. "His decision" to leave, huh.

Microsoft undertook a lot of dismal software engineering and even legal run-ins with the antitrust police to establish 90% desktop penetration. Linux application developers have better things to do than build a desktop that personal computer OEMs would never adopt anyway. Furthermore, even Windows is arguably not viable as a future desktop platform for Microsoft. Microsoft cannot afford another five-year release cycle like the one it took to launch Vista.
