Specialty Materials Manufacturer Improves Plant Efficiency With ISE Technology From Xiotech

Spartech Corporation Realizes Maximum Performance, Reliability, and Value with Xiotech's Emprise 7000 Storage System as "Hub" of its IT Infrastructure

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Xiotech Corporation today announced that Spartech Corporation, a leading producer of specialty materials, selected Xiotech's Emprise(TM) 7000 storage system, powered by Intelligent Storage Element (ISE(TM)) technology, to be the cornerstone of its new IT infrastructure. The manufacturer chose the Emprise 7000 system to help it improve plant efficiency and operations, citing the system's high performance, reliability and overall value in its decision.

Headquartered in Clayton, Mo., Spartech is a leading producer of engineered thermoplastic sheet materials, polymeric compounds and concentrates, thermoformed packaging and engineered product solutions. It faced continuous I/O bottlenecks impacting its ability to accurately plan and update production schedules, which is unacceptable in an industry where speed can be the difference between adjusting to the market and losing business. The company also was facing escalating maintenance fees from its existing storage system vendor. Spartech, therefore, determined it was time to overhaul its legacy IT infrastructure, starting with a new storage system.

"We knew the Emprise 7000 storage system would be the 'hub' of our IT infrastructure because if we couldn't get to our data fast enough, nothing else would matter," said Spartech Manager of IT Operations Mark Holland. "We see Emprise 7000 as the next generation of storage technology--the ISE technology is way ahead of other vendors. It's provided us with better performance, exceptional reliability and the functionality our business requires, all at a lower cost than other vendor solutions."

Emprise 7000 delivers 100 percent usable storage capacity and the industry's most efficient performance, which does not degrade as capacity utilization increases. Because of these features, Spartech moved its critical production data to the Emprise 7000 system and already is seeing significant improvements.

"Emprise 7000 has improved how efficiently our plant is run," said Holland. "Our users can access their data three times faster than before, and reports that used to take 20 minutes to pull are taking less than 3 minutes. We also can use more of our capacity while achieving far superior performance."

Reliability was another critical factor in Spartech's decision. The company needed a solution that would ensure data is always accessible and never compromised. ISE technology, which is the basis for the Emprise 7000 storage systems, features self-healing capabilities, automatically repairing disks in place without human intervention or downtime.

The Emprise 7000 system supports up to 64 ISE (1,024 terabytes), is managed by dual controllers and comes with an industry-exclusive five-year hardware warranty. It includes capabilities such as Web Services-based storage management via ICON Manager, simplified provisioning and management of storage in virtualized server environments via Virtual View, a distributed cluster architecture, Intelligent Provisioning and a suite of data replication solutions.

Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there?
