- Importante paso adelante en la investigación sobre la osteoartritis: los péptidos con colágeno bioactivos estimulan la regeneración de los tejidos de los cartílagos

MONTREAL y KIEL, Alemania, September 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Trabajando en colaboración con la Kiel University, los investigadores del Collagen Research Institute (CRI), con sede en Kiel, han demostrado el efecto estimulador de los péptidos de colágeno bioactivos especiales (FORTIGEL(R)) en el contexto de los experimentos celulares. La semana pasada, el CRI presentó los descubrimientos de sus investigaciones en el Congreso de la Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) celebrado en Montreal. Las investigaciones del CRI proporcionan una explicación para los descubrimientos en los ensayos clínicos conjuntos realizados en la Harvard Medical School y el Tufts Medical Center, tal y como se han presentado en el congreso. Con la ayuda de las técnicas de imágenes especiales (MRI), este ensayo ha demostrado que el metabolismo celular estimulado FORTIGEL(R) en los cartílagos de las articulaciones de las rodillas y promueve la regeneración del tejido de los cartílagos.

En cooperación con la Kiel University, los investigadores del CRI han aplicado los métodos de biología molecular y química de proteínas directamente en las células, a fin de demostrar el efecto estimulador de FORTIGEL(R). Desarrollado por GELITA AG, este producto contiene una combinación especial de péptidos de colágeno bioactivos de alta pureza. "En todas nuestras investigaciones hemos demostrado que, junto a la síntesis del colágeno de Tipo II - FORTIGEL(R) induce el aumento de producción de aggrecan, un proteoglicanos especial que es de vital importancia para la función de los cartílagos", explicó el doctor Steffen Oesser, director del CRI. Esto proporciona una prueba experimental de que la aplicación de los péptidos de colágeno bioactivos estimula la síntesis renovada de la matriz de los cartílagos extracelulares.

El experimento celular subraya el estudio clínico de Harvard/Tufts

Los experimentos basados en las células del CRI confirman los descubrimientos de los ensayos realizados en la Harvard Medical School y el Tufts Medical Center. El CRI ha demostrado de forma clara a nivel celular que FORTIGEL(R) proporciona un aumento del proteoglicano. Anteriormente, los ensayos clínicos de Harvard/Tufts habían demostrado el efecto regenerativo de FORTIGEL(R) en los cartílagos de las articulaciones de rodilla utilizando la técnica de la imagen de objetivos. Estas dos investigaciones se complementan entre ellas.

El ensayo doble ciego controlado por placebo de Harvard/Tufts reclutó a 30 pacientes diagnosticados con osteoartritis de rodilla, revelando una regeneración destacada del tejido de los cartílagos en el grupo de tratamiento basado en FORTIGEL(R). Dentro del grupo tratado con placebo, la degeneración del cartílago progreso igual que antes.

Para analizar los cambios estructurales en el tejido de los cartílagos, los investigadores de Harvard/Tufts desplegaron una técnica de imagen especial (dGEMRIC). Tras la inyección de un tinte especial en la articulación de la rodilla del paciente es posible determinar la densidad de los proteoglicanos en el cartílago con un alto grado de precisión. Los resultados de este ensayo clínico indican un aumento considerable del proteoglicanos tras la aplicación de FORTIGEL(R). Esto sirve como confirmación clínica de los descubrimientos experimentales del CRI.

Tratamiento de la osteoartritis

"La manipulación prevista del metabolismo del cartílago abre nuevas posibilidades para el tratamiento y la prevención de la osteoartritis", enfatizó el doctor Oesser. Al contrario que los analgésicos y los fármacos antirreumáticos, que apenas alivian los síntomas y efectos, FORTIGEL(R) ofrece el potencial de una terapia alimentaria casual.

Existe una cifra mundial de unos 135 millones de personas que padecen osteoartritis. Los expertos han previsto un rápido aumento de esta cifra, sobre todo en los países industrializados. La prevención de las enfermedades artríticas tiene una prioridad absoluta, principalmente por los elevados costes que supone para los sistemas sanitarios.
