Chrome for Linux and Mac Make Beta

Apparently 50 developers outside of Google contributed code to its open source development

Google on Ulitzer

Fifteen months after Chrome for Windows launched, Google Tuesday delivered betas of its browser for both Linux and the Mac. The Mac widgetry was due in the first half.

The Linux team called its port "a labor of love" and said it works well with both Gnome and KDE. Apparently 50 developers outside of Google contributed code to its open source development.

Purring about its speed, Google admitted the built-from-the-ground-up browser for Mac took longer than expected.

It reportedly took 73,804 lines of Mac-specific code and 29 developer builds and it's still missing extensions, bookmark synching, a bookmark manager and a cookie manager but it is a native Mac application. And it includes features such as an Omnibox (where you can both search and type in addresses) and themes from artists.

There are beta extensions for the Windows and Linux versions of Chrome that will permit customization.
