"We encourage people in the U.S. and everywhere to give with their hearts, reach out to these victims, and donate what they can to the relief efforts," said Michael and Susan Dell, co-founders of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, as they yesterday announced a $5M million pledge to the relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina. The pledge, which will be paid out through the couple's family foundation, MSDF, serves to support the victims of the devastation and encourage others to give to the relief efforts.
In all, 90,000 square miles have been declared a federal disaster area in the Gulf States, which were hit by Hurricane Katrina earlier this week. The hurricane that ravaged the land has also devastated families who have lost their homes, schools, and places of work and worship.
"Our support goes out to the families affected by Hurricane Katrina," said Susan Dell, co-founder of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. "These people are faced with rebuilding their lives and their communities, and we need to help."
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the organization is currently spending US$500 million a day on Hurricane Katrina disaster relief. With the total cost of damages, loss of life, and people requiring medical attention increasing on a daily basis, additional and ongoing support will be required for the relief and rebuilding efforts.
"Americans are known for their strength, fortitude, and generosity in times of need," said Michael Dell
