CA to Piggyback on Unbreakable Linux

Computer Associates, a fervent Linux disciple these days, is planning on hopping on Oracle's Unbreakable Linux initiative and turning it into Secure Unbreakable Linux, a clever idea that, if we're not mistaken, could see Oracle representing CA's interests and expanding its horizons.

Kinda funny in a way since CA competes against Oracle with its Ingres database. Oracle has put a lot of muscle behind the Unbreakable Linux push.

Anyway, CA is going open source, if that's the correct word in this case, the hooks to both its eTrust access control - in other words its eTrust notification facility - and its flagship Unicenter enterprise management scheme.

Maybe open source isn't exactly the right word because, the way we hear it, CA has gotten SuSE and Red Hat to agree to put the hooks in United Linux 1.0 and Advanced Server respectively on the theory that the Linux kernel keepers will eventually have to bow to a fait accompli and suck the stuff up.

Then, unless CA changes the code itself, it doesn't have to worry about its software running on Linux.

eTrust is CA's enhanced profile-based security and is supposed to be quite hot on Linux these days. IBM doesn't have anything to put up against it and teamed with Oracle CA could establish a tidy Linux beachhead.

So does anyone have a pointer to the specific kernel changes in UL1 and/or RHAS that were put in for this to work?

Unbreakable. Well ... gimme a hammer and
I'll break anything Oracle cares to put together!

Isn't it interesting how Apple was prevented
from marketing their computers as the fastest
personal computer on Earth. This was deemed to be
misleading to consumers. At the same time Oracle
can talk about unbreakable which never existed anywhere
nor ever will and this does not seem to be
a problem.

Not correct. IBM's Tivoli Access Manager for Operating Systems provides strong access controls on various versions of UNIX and Linux.
