More than 8,000 IBM clients, prospects, business partners and employees are expected to attend Pulse, engaging in conversation about how to fundamentally and cost-effectively change the economics of IT and speeding the delivery of innovative products and services.

Information about the two sessions is below.

Pushing the Limits of Cloud Service Providers to Enable On-demand Virtual Desktops
Monday, March 5, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Presenter: Jim Curtin, CEO of Virtual Bridges

Cloud computing is expanding in almost every direction; however, few have had the impact that we are seeing with regards to the management and provisioning of virtual desktops. Ideally suited for cloud services, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) allows programs, applications, processes and data from remote PCs to be stored and managed from a central location. The result is reduced costs, improved productivity, enhanced security and ultimately a significant increase in demand for cloud-based services. Deployed to customers in 2011, the combination of IBM’s Cloud Service Provider Platform and Virtual Bridges VERDE is providing a powerful service provider-ready solution that not only provisions the cloud infrastructure but also the integrated virtual desktop ‘workload’ on top of it for an immediate, integrated solution that delivers impressive results.

The Next Frontier: On-demand Virtual Desktop Services for Cloud Service Providers
Tuesday, March 6, 2:30 p.m. – 2:50 p.m.
Presenter: Leo Reiter – Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Virtual Bridges

While 2010 was the Year of the Cloud, 2011 took it to the next level - launching desktop management and provisioning in the cloud or Desktops-as-a-Service (DaaS). Using second generation Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), which is ideally suited for the cloud, programs, applications, processes and data from remote PCs can now be stored and managed from a central location. Together IBM Cloud Service Provider Platform and Virtual Bridges VERDE have eliminated the headaches and are delivering a powerful service provider-ready solution that not only provisions the cloud infrastructure but also the integrated virtual desktop workload on top of it for an immediate, integrated solution. In addition, we will demo the integration with industry leading load balancers – F5, which provide critical VDI load balancing and added security features. This session will show how on-premises or cloud hosted desktop virtualization is being used by global cloud service providers to drive results.

IBM and Virtual Bridges maintain a strong partnership, with Virtual Bridges VERDE serving as the cornerstone of IBM’s Virtual Desktop for Smart Business (VDSB) 6.0 offering, designed specifically for enterprises. IBM turned to VERDE for its cost effective approach to provisioning, managing, updating and securing PC environments as well as its broad coverage of both Linux and Windows desktops. VDSB customers enjoy the latest VERDE enhancements, including a new cache I/O storage optimizer that removes CAPEX hurdles long associated with VDI deployments, and endpoint management that integrates with IBM BigFix.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...

Two weeks ago (November 3-5), I attended the Cloud Expo Silicon Valley as a speaker, where I presented on the security and privacy due diligence requirements for cloud solutions. Cloud security is a topical issue for every CIO, CISO, and technology buyer. Decision-makers are always looking for insights on how to mitigate the security risks of implementing and using cloud solutions. Based on the presentation topics covered at the conference, as well as the general discussions heard between sessio...
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
