ITaaS Business Value Alignment

Salesforce.com is an obvious example for CRM software and the trend has continued to evolve

One of the primary objectives of our Drummond Cloud report is to establish the ‘ITaaS Business Value Alignment’ program within our Cloud Best Practices.

A foundation part of moving to Cloud services is a moved from fixed cost IT, where you pay up front for your hardware, software and implementation services, to one where it is all packaged as a rental.

Salesforce.com is an obvious example for CRM software and the trend has continued to evolve to encompass all other aspects of IT.

To help new Cloud users adopt these types of changes we profile best practice scenarios where others have already done so, and for our Drummond report we’ll be doing this via the province of Ontario. As early as 2009 they were already underway with this shift to ITaaS, where as the CIO Dave Nicholl explains in this article,

The biggest challenge around virtualization has been moving from an “I own it” to an “I’m moving to shared services and I’m buying a service” model, according to Nicholl. “But we’re making great progress because people believe that the model works, and I think we’ve proven that it works.”

He then illustrates a number of the business transformation benefits that are being achieved via these new strategies, such as :

  • we’ve embraced enterprise architecture as the core foundation of all of our application development techniques and services.”
  • virtualization: Over 1,000 servers have been removed from an estate of about 6,000
  • conducted a shared services consolidation to drive $100m annually in savings
  • single app consolidation: one app for ERP, one for HR, etc.
  • project management Centre of Excellence

These types of improvements provide a framework for the “Business Value Alignment” aspects of planning Cloud IT stratgy, referring to the business-centric aspects of planning ROI and so forth.

By detailing where Ontario is at now and specifically how they are integrating Cloud services into this type of existing program activity, we’ll define and showcase how others can do the same – ITaaS Business Value planning best practices.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...
