PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/18/12 -- Today at the DEMO conference, rollApp Inc. announced the launch of its free beta "OpenOffice on iPad" online service, available at http://www.rollApp.com/OpenOffice.
rollApp is developing technology that instantly moves existing applications to the cloud. It will enable rollApp users to run any existing software on any device that has a browser. Today this technology allows rollApp to offer millions of office users access to their favorite applications on iPad. The user does not have to install anything because the service works via browser. At the same time, rollApp provides an experience almost identical to applications installed locally.
Apache OpenOffice is a leading office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics and more. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages, including Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is open source software, therefore, the users of the rollApp service will not face any licensing risks.
rollApp is integrated with popular cloud storage providers such as Dropbox, Box (former Box.Net) and Google.Docs. Because of this, users can work directly with all of the files they host in the cloud.
"New devices and platforms rapidly emerge these days. rollApp's technology allows the reuse of existing programs, such as OpenOffice, on new devices, such as iPad. So, instead of spending their time and energy on porting programs to yet another platform, engineers can focus on developing new functionality," said Bjarne Stroustrup, the author of C++ programming language and member of the rollApp Advisory Board.
"These days, tablets have become mainstream. People want to use their favorite applications on new devices like iPad. rollApp makes it possible," said Vlad Pavlov, rollApp founder and CEO.
While in the beta phase, the rollApp service is free. Currently, rollApp is building its server capacity. Once registered, a user may have to wait before her account is activated.
rollApp welcomes software vendors to partner in making their desktop products available on iPads and other tablet devices.
