Cloud Expo 2012 New York: Round-Up from the Blogosphere

A brief selection of what's being written about last month's 10th Cloud Expo held in the Javits Center, New York City

A brief selection of what's being written about last month's 10th Cloud Expo held in the Javits Center, New York City:

Cloud Expo 2012 New York Double the Size of Last Year

"This year's Cloud Expo New York appeared to be double the size of last year. Not only w,ere there more solution providers on the expo floor, there appeared to me quite a few additional sessions to attend. I felt even the session quality was better than last year, with more knowledge spread across various tracks, and it was obvious the expertise was, well, more expert than before. There also appeared to be more attendees, and in greater diversity than the previous year.

Of course, all of this improvement is most likely due to the simple fact the market for cloud computing is maturing rapidly. In fact, if there was one easy way to witness the growth of cloud computing, it would be simply through viewing the sheer growth of this conference over one year."

TRACY RUTHKOWSKI, University of Michigan - in her "Exploring the Cloud" blog

This Conference Provided a Great Overview

"This conference provided a great overview of a fascinating and expanding ecosystem. There is plenty to think about on the long flight home."

BRETT WILSON - Managing Consultant & Co-Founder at Sixtree
, in the Sixtree company blog

The Fur Was Flying at Cloud Expo

"The fur was flying at [last] week's Cloud Expo ... In a keynote address at Cloud Expo on Wednesday, Sameer Dholakia, group VP and general manager of Citrix cloud platforms group, acknowledged the rumblings from the OpenStack camp and explained why Citrix decided to decamp from OpenStack and push forward with CloudStack."

JEFFREY SCHWARTZ - Editor-at-Large, RedmondMag.com,
in an article entitled "Rackspace to Citrix on CloudStack: What Were You Thinking?"

Delegates Flocked to Javits Center to Check Out the Hottest Topics and Trends

"Crowds of Cloud Expo New York attendees took the opportunity to 'Test Drive' the HP Cloud earlier this month. Despite rain the first few days and the traffic jams created by President Obama’s visit to the city, Cloud Expo delegates flocked to Javits Center to check out the hottest topics and trends in cloud computing during the various technical sessions, keynotes and exhibits."

DARLENE LYNCH - HP Community Manager, in a round-up article for HP's "Scaling the Cloud" blog

Big-Data Cloud Analytics Arrive at Cloud Expo

"The combination of resource pooling, universal accessibility and cost savings make the cloud an attractive hub for big data, several cloud providers said at the recent Cloud Expo 2012 trade show in New York."

JESSICA SCARPATI, in an article entitled "Service Providers Anticipate SMB Demand for Big-Data Cloud Analytics"

It Was an Interesting Show - There Are So Many New Vendors with New Solutions

"Cloud Expo New York 2012 has come and gone. It was an interesting show. There are so many new vendors with new solutions, and each vendor takes aim at a perceived obstacle to the cloud.

Three themes stood out. First, enterprises are building private clouds (or at least they want to!). Second, hybrid cloud management is the future. Third, most enterprises will have a mix of public and private cloud services. These three items all come together in the third major theme: OpenStack, which just might be the future of enterprise cloud management and deployment."

HANK MARQUIS - Practice Director, Cloud Solutions at Global Knowledge Training - in a GlobalKnowledge.com blog posting titled "A Look Back on Cloud Expo 2012 and OpenStack"

A Lot of the Attendance Was From Financial Institutions, Banks, and Government Contractors

"I spent most of last week at Cloud Expo New York, attending, presenting but mostly exhibiting with our partner Panzura. ... since it was in NY, a lot of the attendance were financial institutions, banks, and government contractors who came up from Maryland, Virginia or DC. ... Last week was the first time that I felt I did less educating and more pitching."

MARC VILLEMADE - Director of Business Development at Scality,
on Scality's blog in a post titled "Does Enterprise Finally Understand Object Storage?"

NYC is Such a Great Place Filled with Diversity and Unique Individuals

"I had the pleasure of spending [last] week presenting cloud-hosted virtual desktops with our partner Dell and Dell Wyse at the Cloud Expo event in NYC. NYC is such a great place filled with diversity and unique individuals, to say the least. The event show floor on the other hand was not so unique. It seems that everyone is playing in the IaaS space and differentiating is very difficult. ... The good news is that the cloud is finally garnering the recognition of companies of all sizes as a valid option for IT services. Those that have already adopted IaaS, or other cloud services, are quick to see the value of moving virtual desktops to this same delivery model.

DAVID GRANT, VP of Marketing at Desktone, in a blog titled "Cloudy Expo - Navigating the Sea of Cloud"

At Cloud Expo, We Received Much Positive Feedback on our Enterprise API Management Offering

"APIs are becoming the primary way that businesses interact with their customers, reach new markets, and provide the global app development community with the tools to deliver innovative new business capabilities to customers. ... At Cloud Expo, we received much positive feedback on Atmosphere, our enterprise API management offering. Atmosphere provides a secure, robust platform that companies can use to share their APIs with the growing app developer community, their partners, and customers."

LISA BLANK - Consultant at SOA Software, in the SOA Software company blog

Cloud Expo Deserves Tremendous Props for Their Rest Area

"Cloud Expo deserves tremendous props for their rest area. Situated in the center of the expo floor, the space allowed slouching, working, napping and everything in-between.

The array of cloud bean bags were perfect for casual relaxation. Professionals and exhibitors could cool their heels in between sessions, while patrons and visitors munched on tasty ballpark treats from the food stations. Hot dogs, Pretzels and cloud bean bags? Yes, yes and yes!"

KENNY LI - Co-founder & VP of Operations at Cloud Spectator - in a blog entry, "The Top 5 Most Fun Booths at Cloud Expo"

Other Responses in Brief

"There were a number of good takeaways for CxOs, application developers, system administrators and security gurus."

"BSQUARE is in the business of selling software solutions for smart connected devices. The major cloud platforms defy a simple, side-by-side analysis. Each of the major IaaS public-cloud platforms offers their own unique strengths and functionality. Options for on-site private cloud are diverse as well, and must be designed and deployed while taking existing legacy architecture and infrastructure into account. Then the reality is that most enterprises are embarking on a hybrid cloud strategy and programs. In this Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo (http://www.CloudComputingExpo.com), moderated by Ashar Baig, Research Director, Cloud, at Gigaom Research, Nate Gordon, Director of T...

“In the past year we've seen a lot of stabilization of WebRTC. You can now use it in production with a far greater degree of certainty. A lot of the real developments in the past year have been in things like the data channel, which will enable a whole new type of application," explained Peter Dunkley, Technical Director at Acision, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY - announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals. The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
"People are a lot more knowledgeable about APIs now. There are two types of people who work with APIs - IT people who want to use APIs for something internal and the product managers who want to do something outside APIs for people to connect to them," explained Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at SOA Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at Cloud Expo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa, at more than US$500 billion, and ranks 23rd in the world. A recent re-evaluation of Nigeria's true economic size doubled the previous estimate, and brought it well ahead of South Africa, which is a member (unlike Nigeria) of the G20 club for political as well as economic reasons. Nigeria's economy can be said to be quite diverse from one point of view, but heavily dependent on oil and gas at the same time. Oil and natural gas account for about 15% of Nigera's overall economy, but traditionally represent more than 90% of the country's exports and as...
The Internet of Things is a misnomer. That implies that everything is on the Internet, and that simply should not be - especially for things that are blurring the line between medical devices that stimulate like a pacemaker and quantified self-sensors like a pedometer or pulse tracker. The mesh of things that we manage must be segmented into zones of trust for sensing data, transmitting data, receiving command and control administrative changes, and peer-to-peer mesh messaging. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Ryan Bagnulo, Solution Architect / Software Engineer at SOA Software, focused on desi...
"At our booth we are showing how to provide trust in the Internet of Things. Trust is where everything starts to become secure and trustworthy. Now with the scaling of the Internet of Things it becomes an interesting question – I've heard numbers from 200 billion devices next year up to a trillion in the next 10 to 15 years," explained Johannes Lintzen, Vice President of Sales at Utimaco, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
"For over 25 years we have been working with a lot of enterprise customers and we have seen how companies create applications. Today’s enterprise is being driven by disruptive competitive and human capital requirements to provide enterprise application access through not only desktops, but also mobile devices. To retrofit existing programs across all these devices using traditional programming methods is very costly and time consuming – often prohibitively so. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., discussed how you can create applications that run on all mobile devices as well as laptops and desktops using a visual drag-and-drop application – and eForms-buildi...
We certainly live in interesting technological times. And no more interesting than the current competing IoT standards for connectivity. Various standards bodies, approaches, and ecosystems are vying for mindshare and positioning for a competitive edge. It is clear that when the dust settles, we will have new protocols, evolved protocols, that will change the way we interact with devices and infrastructure. We will also have evolved web protocols, like HTTP/2, that will be changing the very core of our infrastructures. At the same time, we have old approaches made new again like micro-services...
