VMware, Intel and NEC are still waiting to hear if their applications to join the open source OpenStack Foundation as dues-paying Gold members have been accepted.

VMware’s surprise application is considered a particular coup for the fledgling organization since it was positioned as OpenStack’s proprietary opposition.

The foundation reportedly ran out of time at its first board meeting last week and although it ran seven hours the applications were last on its agenda and so it might take until its next meeting in mid-October for the applications to be cleared.

It is unclear what VMware intends to do in OpenStack. Its new $1.2 Nicira acquisition is already a member and is working on Quantum, the virtual networking component for OpenStack. Whether VMware will ultimately provide interoperability between its stuff and OpenStack cloud platform is the question.

The meeting did get around to making SUSE director of industry initiatives, emerging standards and open source Alan Clark chairman and Cisco cloud CTO Lew Tucker vice-chairman.

Rackspace turned the OpenStack project over to the independent foundation in April to avoid appearances of its control over the platform.
