Top Five Virtualization Performance Myths

Monitoring performance and making changes to optimize performance

Making the most of your virtualized environment means monitoring performance and making changes to optimize performance. The fact is that there are a number of things that can hamper performance in a virtualized environment, and if you’re not looking at all of them you can find yourself with an unexpected performance bottleneck.

Accordingly, here are some of the most common virtualization performance myths of which you need to be aware:

  1. Performance monitoring and capacity planning are the same thing. Performance monitoring and capacity planning complement one another, but they work in very different ways. The first looks at real-time, fast-moving events that may occur and disappear in a matter of moments. Capacity planning, on the other hand, looks at the long term. It looks at those overall trends that will determine where you need to be in the future.
  2. Business critical applications should not be virtualized because of the performance hit. The fact of the matter is that, if you’re going to get all of the benefits virtualization has to offer, it’s going to include your business critical applications. There are plenty of failsafe measures you can put in place to make sure that performance is where it needs to be, and that enough resources are allocated at all times. This is one of the main reasons some businesses are hesitant to virtualize.
  3. It’s impossible to determine true ROI for performance management in a virtualized environment. Performance management is part of helping to determine ROI, and it’s essential if an organization is going to be able to recognize the long-term benefits of virtualization.
  4. Performance management can happen after the fact. Instead, performance management needs to be dealt with in real time. All of the variables exist only for a given moment, and you need to be able to look at them and address them in a live, interactive way.
  5. Large virtualization management vendors are the best way to manage performance. This isn’t always the case. In fact, third party vendors will often have a much better handle on the real workings of how a given environment can and should be analyzed. They’re also more experienced than large vendors with dynamic environments with diverse hypervisors and hybrid infrastructures.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
