Ulmon, a mobile application development company specializing in location-aware travel and navigation apps, today announced that City Maps 2Go, its travel app designed to be used with no internet connection, recently hit a major milestone – 5 million map downloads worldwide. To celebrate, Ulmon is releasing a new and improved version of the app, which is now available for download in the App Store for $1.99 (a free to download LITE version is also available) and on Google Play, which is free with five included maps (an additional in-app purchase is available to unlock more).
Featuring more than 7,800 highly interactive, detailed vector maps worldwide (all free to download once the app has been purchased), which can be pre-loaded onto a user’s mobile device, City Maps 2Go offers users access to search and discover millions of points of interest (POI) and hundreds of thousands of travel articles and recommendations (via the app’s included “Wiki Abstracts,” which provides information included in the first few paragraphs of the Wikipedia article of the POI) anywhere, anytime - even when there is little to no network coverage, when users have limited data plans, or when traveling abroad and wanting to avoid exorbitant data roaming charges.
What’s New in Version 4.2:
The new feature-rich version of City Maps 2Go offers users a number of fun, interactive elements that greatly enhance the user experience. Some of these include: “Friend Finder,” which matches a user’s contacts, Facebook or Twitter connections to current Ulmon users, the ability to search for nearby maps and then search them by places on that map. Other great additions include the ability for users to organize favorite places into lists, add colored pins, ad notes to places, and add their Facebook profile photos/upload a new photo into the their Ulmon profile.
“For anyone on the go, whether traveling in their home town, across the country or on the other side of the world, City Maps 2Go is the most comprehensive offline map app for iOS and Android devices,” said Florian Kandler, co-founder and CMO, Ulmon. “With dozens of devices on the market that have Wi-Fi-only capabilities, including the Google Nexus 7 and the soon to be released iPad Mini, CityMaps 2 Go is the ultimate travel companion as it delivers all of the map and location information you need, all without having to worry about having an internet connection.”
To further enhance the app’s depth, Ulmon offers users access to “Wiki Plus,” a one-time in-app purchase (IAP) of $2.99, which allows users to add “travel guides” that are curated from Wikipedia sources to an unlimited number of maps. This IAP adds 200,000 full Wikipedia articles (text and images) to the user’s maps so they can read, view information and see photos of landmarks, places of interest and tourist attractions, completely offline, making it the traveler’s ultimate digital companion.
In addition, hotels can be booked via City Maps 2Go, through in-app integration with booking.com. Users can discover hotels and view their price range and user ratings offline (for booking a hotel, the user must go online).
Incorporating OpenStreetMap data (open source) to provide reliable, highly accurate maps and travel content, City Maps 2Go allows users to pin, bookmark and/or rate places, and can even share and receive ratings and recommendations by following other users Twitter-style.
