nCircle, the leader in information risk and security performance management, today announced completion of a project to deliver a FIPS 140-2 compliant version of OpenSSH using OpenSSL. nCircle sponsored the development and validation of this software in partnership with the OpenSSL Software Foundation, ensuring it would be shared with the open source community.
Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS 140-2) is a U.S. federal government encryption standard published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The standard is widely used by federal agencies and has been adopted by the Canadian government's Communication Security Establishment and is jointly administered by these bodies through the Cryptographic Module Validation Programme.
“nCircle has been a participant in the open source software community for over ten years,” said Rich Gaushell, director of engineering for nCircle. “We rely on open source software in our day-to-day operations and in our products, and we value the open source community. We’re pleased to partner with the OpenSSL Foundation to create a FIPS 140-2 compliant version of OpenSSH in a way that ensures the OpenSSL validation by NIST can be maintained.”
“nCircle’s sponsorship of this project has been instrumental in bringing it to fruition,” said Steve Marquess, president for the OpenSSL Software Foundation. “A FIPS 140-2 compliant version of OpenSSH is valuable for any software company working with the U.S. or Canadian governments.”
