SoftLayer & 10gen Launch Fully Engineered MongoDB Systems

Based on 10gen's New Cloud Subscription Offering, SoftLayer to Offer Certified MongoDB Systems With Convenient Pay-as-You-Go Pricing, Unified Billing and Support

NEW YORK, NY and DALLAS, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 12/04/12 -- 10gen, the MongoDB company, and SoftLayer Technologies, a leading provider of global cloud infrastructure, today announced the general availability of new on-demand MongoDB production-class systems available across SoftLayer's global cloud infrastructure. The companies collaborated to engineer the systems, including optimized hardware and OS configurations, automated deployment of multi-data center clusters, and integrated monitoring and support. MongoDB Cloud Subscriptions is a new offering from 10gen of certified pre-built MongoDB systems.

SoftLayer's MongoDB systems will allow organizations to start using MongoDB more quickly by provisioning a complete solution set through SoftLayer's portal or API for ease of management, administration and support. The flexible pay-as-you-go service simplifies the buying process and enables organizations to swiftly deploy highly scalable and available production-grade systems, accelerating the speed of deployment of big data applications and providing greater business agility.

When customers purchase MongoDB systems from SoftLayer, they receive:

  • Easy to design, order, and provision MongoDB environments making it simple to create and configure customized MongoDB clusters at the push of a button
  • High performance and superior reliability using pre-engineered systems that are optimized for running MongoDB including dedicated bare metal servers
  • MongoDB Gold Subscription Edition which includes subscriber edition features, 24x7 unlimited phone and web support, emergency patches and a commercial license
  • Pay-as-you-go pricing providing the flexibility of monthly billing and no long-term contracts

"Our aim is for MongoDB to be available in combined offerings, so that the growing number of organizations that want to deploy in the cloud have an easy and scalable solution," said Eliot Horowitz, CTO of 10gen. "We look forward to working with SoftLayer to bring this new service to market as a convenient and effective way to deploy big data workloads."

With MongoDB Cloud Subscriptions, 10gen is working with partners like SoftLayer to bundle MongoDB systems that exhibit maximum performance and reliability, and unique collaborative support with its partners. Customers will have access to pre-engineered systems, certified by 10gen, which are optimized to run MongoDB-built applications.

SoftLayer's MongoDB engineered systems include options from entry-level quad-core servers to powerful sixteen-core, high-performance computing nodes, all available on demand and in real-time via SoftLayer's portal and API. These big data deployments may be fully integrated with other SoftLayer infrastructure solutions, with secure intra-architecture and inter-data center connectivity via the company's global private network.

"We've taken the guesswork out of deploying and managing big data solutions with this unique subscription offering," said Duke Skarda, CTO of SoftLayer. "This is further validation of our commitment to deliver big data solutions that can run over our highly scalable, automated cloud platform."

The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, and physical persons. In the IoT vision, every new "thing" - sensor, actuator, data source, data con...
Container frameworks, such as Docker, provide a variety of benefits, including density of deployment across infrastructure, convenience for application developers to push updates with low operational hand-holding, and a fairly well-defined deployment workflow that can be orchestrated. Container frameworks also enable a DevOps approach to application development by cleanly separating concerns between operations and development teams. But running multi-container, multi-server apps with containers is very hard. You have to learn five new and different technologies and best practices (libswarm, sy...
