BEDFORD, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/11/12 -- EnterpriseDB, the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products, Oracle database compatibility solutions and add-on tools for PostgreSQL, today announced the public release of Postgres Plus xDB Replication Server v5.0 with Multi-Master Replication (MMR). The new MMR capability eliminates a single point of failure, improving High Availability. It also enables database administrators (DBAs) to provide consistent and expanded access to near real-time data across geographically distributed systems. These benefits also help control costs compared to traditional database solutions.
With the estimated number of downloads of PostgreSQL and add-ons topping five million over the past year, enterprises worldwide are accelerating their adoption of Postgres and its components. This has fueled demand for enterprise-class add-on capabilities like Multi-Master Replication that give DBAs greater flexibility and broad new powers to leverage their open source deployments. Add-on tools help them customize their deployments to address individual needs for scalability, availability and performance.
"Multi-Master Replication capability is the kind of enterprise feature that has won recognition for Postgres among large, global brands," Ed Boyajian, CEO and President of EnterpriseDB, said. "Our leadership position as the largest provider of Postgres solutions gives us a responsibility to deliver tools for EnterpriseDB customers and PostgreSQL users that help them meet the broad demands of the enterprise. Our MMR capability marks a significant advance in our mission."
"PostgreSQL has achieved a meaningful presence in the market and global brands now consider it a viable alternative to traditional databases for a range of mission critical and non-mission critical applications," Donald Feinberg, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst of Gartner, said. "Fortune 500 customers provide the underlying demand and support for add-on tools that enable DBAs to extract greater value from their databases and contribute to business objectives by expanding access to data and cutting licensing and hardware costs."
Multi-Master Replication Benefits
Multi-Master Replication presents significant benefits for geographically distributed organizations. DBAs can designate a master for each locality for better write and read performance. Also, multiple masters throughout an organization -- whether local or geographically dispersed -- eliminates a single point of failure for e-commerce and other round the clock operations. If one master goes down, traffic can be routed to one of the other masters. This improves High Availability of their systems.
Also, for geographically dispersed systems that rely on one or more batch updates daily to bring everyone up to date from a central master, a continuously synchronizing multi-master system allows everyone to see all the data in near real time eliminating stale views of critical data.
Finally, with replication, DBAs can expand user access to the data and continue to utilize existing tools while also using commodity hardware.
More technical details of the new capability include:
- Improved write performance for multi-location updating and applications that are tolerant of eventual consistency
- Read scalability for read-mostly applications
- Enhanced write availability in single or multiple data centers
- Near real-time data synchronization across geographies
