SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/27/13 -- Typesafe, the company empowering developers to build high performance web applications, today announced the appointment of Derek Henninger as Vice President of Engineering. With more than two decades of experience managing high caliber developers, Henninger will lead the software engineering teams building Typesafe's products and Akka, Play and Scala open source projects.
"More and more developers are drawn to the Scala programming language, Akka runtime and Play framework for their elegance and efficiency, but also the ability to bring performance, productivity and scalability to the Java ecosystem," said Henninger. "Typesafe delivers the only development environment that enables the use of these technologies within the enterprise. I'm honored to lead this exemplary team of engineers, and look forward to helping the company's customers meet the increasing demands for modern reactive web applications."
Henninger most recently served as Director of R&D for VMware's Development Tools, where he led product development for open source projects including WaveMaker, Scripted, and Spring Tool Suite among other products. Henninger was co-founder of Persistence Software, a NASDAQ listed company that created a new approach for managing data in high-transaction banking and communications systems. He has also held VP Engineering positions at Progress Software and WaveMaker Software. Henninger has degrees in Computer Science and Economics from University of California at Davis.
"Derek brings deep industry knowledge and a proven track record in product development to Typesafe," said Mark Brewer, CEO of Typesafe. "His 20+ years of experience, coupled with broad functional expertise will be incredibly valuable as Typesafe continues to broaden its technology platform and keep pace with our rapid growth trajectory."
With an expanding portfolio of enterprise customers, such as Juniper Networks, Workday and LinkedIn, Henninger's appointment as VP of Engineering will further align Typesafe's core open source technologies to provide comprehensive support and services. Typesafe offers a next generation toolset for building reactive, scalable and robust applications in Java and Scala, and Henninger will be instrumental in furthering adoption and support for these projects.
"Derek truly understands the challenges businesses face when developing and supporting reactive and robust applications," said Martin Odersky, co-founder, Chairman and Chief Architect at Typesafe. "He will be a tremendous asset to Typesafe, providing a unified vision across all of our technologies and services."
