MapR Technologies, the Hadoop technology concern, has gotten a $30 million C round of financing led by new investor Mayfield Fund. Existing backers Lightspeed Venture Partners, NEA and Redpoint Ventures participated. The new money brings total funding to $59 million.

The new financing will be used for global expansion and R&D. The company says it wants to continue to put distance between itself and rival distributions.

"Organizations across industries have experimented and tested various use cases on Hadoop. Now we are entering a new phase where the focus is on production deployments, which calls for the broad support of applications that MapR uniquely provides," CEO John Schroeder said.

MapR says its Big Data Platform is currently being used in production across financial services, government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, Fortune 100 and Web 2.0 companies and includes the analysis of hundreds of billions of objects a day; 90% of the Internet population monthly; and over a trillion dollars of retail transactions annually.

Amazon, Cisco, EMC and Google are part of its broad partner ecosystem.

The start-up means to expand in Asia-Pacific to serve its growing customer base there. Late last year, the company launched its European operations opening offices in London and Munich.

The Mayfield Fund figures MapR has propelled big business to embrace Big Data by delivering on the promise of Hadoop and is in a position to emerge as the Big Data platform of choice for the enterprise. Analysts project the Big Data market reaching $5 billion by 2016.

MapR continues to participate in the development of Apache Drill, a highly transparent open source project aimed at a distributed system for the interactive analysis of large-scale datasets. Apache Drill is supposed to represent a huge leap forward for organizations looking to augment their Big Data processing with interactive queries across massive data sets.
