Sun's General Counsel, Matt Dillon (pictured), this week started a blog. He was evidently spurred on by the example of over 3,000 Sun employees - most notably, CEO Jonathan Schwartz but let's not forget either Tim Bray (whose initiative it originally was, to bring Sun into the Blogging Age, and who as a result was specifically tasked with so 'making it happen' by Schwartz)."My primary motivation is a question that I am frequently asked. It comes in two forms. From others in my profession, it is articulated as: 'What is it like being the General Counsel of a Fortune 500 company like Sun Microsystems'" From my children it is posed as: 'Daddy, what do you DO at work all day?'
Mike Dillon serves as Sun's General Counsel - the senior most lawyer in all of Sun - as well as Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary. He has worked at Sun twice now during his 20-year career. From 1993 to 1999, he served in a variety of roles in Sun's legal department including in support of Sun Microelectronics, Sun Soft, Inc., and I-Planet. Then in 2002, he rejoined Sun as Vice President of the Products Law Group. In this role, he was responsible for legal support for all of Sun's product development efforts. In April, 2004 he was appointed to his current role as Sun's General Counsel.
As Schwartz expressed it, in his own pioneering CEO blog:
"[Mike], too, is now the only member of his tribe, the only GC in all the Fortune 500 to have a blog."
