Enabling Offline AJAX

AJAX is a great technology that enables a whole new class of web applications

AJAX is a great technology that enables a whole new class of web applications. One of the struggles, however, is the fact that web applications require an always-on Internet connection. An embeddable database such as Apache Derby allows you to remove this leash and run AJAX applications while you are offline. Derby can run embedded in a browser, invisible to the user, and allow you to reliably and securely store application data using standards-based APIs. Since Derby is written in Java, this storage is portable across numerous platforms and browsers. In this session I will demonstrate an offline AJAX application using embedded Derby, and then go under the hood to show you how this is implemented and how you can build applications like this yourself.

David Van Couvering, who will present this AJAXWorld session , has spent his engineering career crossing the bridge between databases and the middle tier world of application servers, Java and distributed systems. He was the original architect for the Sybase J2EE application server and for the first release of the clustered Sun Java Application Server Enterprise Edition. Currently he is involved in database technology at Sun, and is a committer for Apache Derby and a member of the Apache DB PMC.

AJAXWorld Conference & Expo is being sponsored by the world's most respected AJAX techology enablers. Platinum Sponsors of the event are Adobe Systems, Cynergy Systems, JackBe, and TIBCO; Gold Sponsors include IBM, BackBase, ComponentArt, Helmi Technologies, Infragistics, Laszlo Systems, Nexaweb, Parasoft, and telerik. Leading AJAX technology contributors, Apress, Google, U1 Consulting Group, and Zapatec are among charter exhibitors of this event.
