OpenDaylight Announces Summer Internship Program for Student Developers

Interns Will Be at the Forefront of Networking Innovation in SDN and Working With the Industry's Leading Technologists

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/10/14 -- The OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source platform to advance Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced a summer internship program for student developers who want to obtain real-world development experience in SDN from the industry's leading technologists while helping to advance SDN and NFV.

The OpenDaylight open source community comprises the industry's largest group of developers who are collaborating across companies to create a common, open SDN and NFV platform. Interns will have the opportunity to drive further innovation in SDN for OpenDaylight's next open source software release called Helium. Five students will be chosen to work with mentors on new development projects, such as automated cluster testing, creating a better host tracker or on self-submitted projects.

"We are seeing a fundamental shift in the way networks are architected and managed, the current crop of students has a chance to get a front row seat to this transformation," said Neela Jacques, executive director, OpenDaylight Project. "Participating in a project like OpenDaylight gives a student an unparalleled chance to gain broad exposure to a range of technologies, developers and technology providers, while writing real code for the project."

Through OpenDaylight's internship program, students can expand their knowledge of both traditional and emerging networking technologies and protocols. At its core OpenDaylight is an SDN controller written in Java and utilizing OSGi bundles to promote modularity and easy extensibility. The controller exposes both RESTful and OSGi interfaces for applications and controller services and also has a pluggable architecture allowing for multiple and different network protocols. Currently implemented protocols include OpenFlow versions 1.0 and 1.3, OVSDB, NETCONF, BGP-LS, PCEP, LISP and SNMP. There are various extensions available beyond the core controller to provide functionality such as virtual networking, DDoS, and network policy management.

Interns will work remotely and receive a stipend. The deadline to apply is April 25, 2014 and the program runs from May 19 to August 22, 2014. For details and to apply, please visit: http://www.opendaylight.org/developers/summer-intern-program.
