Xen Project Launches Embedded and Automotive Initiative

GlobalLogic to Build on Early Contributions and Spearhead New Development

CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 08/18/14 -- Xen Project Developer Summit -- The Xen Project Collaborative Project hosted at The Linux Foundation today announced a new Embedded and Automotive initiative. Successful in running the world's largest clouds and first to market with ARM support, a growing number of companies are increasingly interested in advancing open source Xen Project virtualization in non-data center scenarios.

In the automotive industry, for instance, OEMs and automotive manufacturers that adopt open source virtualization are able to quickly and cost-effectively develop a flexible, robust, and customizable integrated cockpit -- one that keeps drivers safe, while meeting consumers' connected car expectations.

Artem Mygaiev, AVP Development at GlobalLogic Inc., a full-lifecycle product development services company, will serve as the Embedded and Automotive Project Lead. Using Xen Project hypervisor provides excellent system security, resource isolation, high availability and easy integration of legacy and 3rd party applications. This makes the technology an ideal match for embedded systems across a range of industries, from automotive and avionics to mobile and consumer electronics.

"With ARM support, Xen Project technology is a perfect fit for embedded systems and automotive use," said Alex Agizim, CTO of Embedded Systems at GlobalLogic, which also is a member of the Linux Foundation Automotive Grade Linux Steering Committee. "For example, our Nautilus platform, based on Xen Project virtualization, enables our in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and auto manufacturing partners to quickly and cost-effectively develop hybrid Android/Linux-based systems. Using Nautilus, developers are able to run multiple sandboxed OSes on a single System-on-Chip (SOC). This provides superior functionality and security for both infotainment and operational functions within a car."

Additionally, previous code contributions from ARM, Citrix, DornerWorks, Galois and Washington University will complement the new subproject's work. GlobalLogic also plans to contribute driver support for QNX and Android OSes common within the auto industry, several paravirtualization Linux kernel drivers and the ability to virtualize various GPUs, USB and audio devices without compromising performance. Enhancements to Xen Project Hypervisor on ARM, real-time scheduling, as well as improved security, boot time, stability and reliability are planned for the next two Xen Project releases.

"The Xen Project ecosystem keeps growing as more companies and developers recognize its potential to simplify complex hardware and software systems, while ensuring extreme security and scalability. Embedded, automotive and mobile use cases are just the latest examples. We appreciate GlobalLogic's contributions and the resources they're committing to tailor Xen Project virtualization for these exciting new opportunities," said Lars Kurth, Xen Project Advisory Board Chairman.

GlobalLogic, in partnership with The Linux Foundation, will present a free webinar at 9 a.m. PDT, Wednesday, August 20, 2014, titled "Virtualization in the Automotive Industry." Register today to learn how Xen Project technology adds reliability and security when adopting virtualization for automotive software development.

Vendors and individual developers interested in collaborating on embedded, automotive and mobile use cases are encouraged to join the new Xen Project subproject at http://xenproject.org/developers/teams/embedded-and-automotive.html. Additional Xen Project subprojects include: Mirage OS, XAPI, PVOPS and Xen Project Hypervisor on ARM.
