HP Expands Linux Management, Cluster Apps

Hewlett-Packard has expanded its Linux portfolio for enterprise customers by adding a bunch of new management and clustering products. The new widgetry is aimed at enabling rapid deployment of multiple Linux and blade servers, performance monitoring, problem resolution, basic network management, and clustering. The management applications include:
  • ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack Linux Edition - to automate the process of deploying and redeploying ProLiant servers. The Linux Edition integrates Altiris' Deployment Solution application and is supposed to let customers deploy large numbers of servers quickly.
  • OpenView Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 for Linux - an entry-level product for smaller networks requiring basic network management from a single management station. It includes a new GUI that provides a summary of network status and quick access to detailed event data and targeted maps.
  • OpenView GlancePlus for Linux - to maximize the uptime of applications through real-time performance monitoring and diagnostics on Linux.
  • OpenCall Media Platform on Linux - a carrier-grade software-based media platform for voice portals, mass alarming and alerting and voicemail replacement. On the clustering side, HP's new Linux offerings include:
  • High Performance Clusters LC series: a factory-integrated technical computing offering using ProLiant servers running Linux. Targeted at the entry-level to mid-range Linux computational market, the LC series provides cluster configurations of 16 to 128 nodes featuring ProLiant DL380 and DL360 servers.
  • Enhanced HP Serviceguard for Linux: high-availability clustering software providing continuous access to critical applications, information and services. The upgrade supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 certified for up to 16 nodes. It also includes MySQL and Oracle toolkits for rapid integration and provides increased ProLiant and StorageWorks portfolio coverage. HP plans to add support for its 64-bit Integrity servers towards the end of this year.
  • ProLiant Server Solutions for Lotus Domino: a pre-configured suite providing increased management and control of Linux environments, while boosting scalability and availability of Lotus Domino server applications. The suite enhances availability of the Domino enterprise servers by using SteelEye's LifeKeeper clustering application, ProLiant servers, StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000 storage systems and HP's Adaptive Enterprise technologies such as rapid provisioning for Linux with the ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack.
  • Parallel Database Cluster for Linux on Oracle: A do-it-yourself clustering kit for accelerating the deployment of Oracle database clusters on Linux-based ProLiant servers. HP boasted that it added Bank of America, AutoTradeCenter and Sandia Labs to its roster of Linux customers.

    IoT & Smart Cities Stories
While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...

Based on the presentation topics covered at the conference, as well as the general discussions heard between sessio...
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
