Ex-SuSE VP to Collect SCO's Linux Tax in Europe

Ex-SuSE VP to Collect SCO's Linux Tax in Europe

Ah, sweet irony. Gregory Blepp, the guy who had a lot to do with pulling United Linux together when he worked for SuSE as VP, international business and was on the United Linux board of managers guiding the operating system's fate, has gone to work for the infamous SCO Group as VP of SCOsource, SCO's scheme to collect a Unix tax on all corporate Linux users. Blepp, who reports to Chris Sontag, the head of the SCOsource Division, was initially supposed to work the European side, where SCO has one little problem - a German court order forbidding it to press its claims without proof positive they're true. Blepp, however, confided to us at press time that he has now been given a global mandate and will negotiate with potential licensees worldwide while Sontag sees to strategy. Blepp's first job will be to deconstruct that German injunction against SCO. He figures it should take a couple of weeks and will not be that hard.

Give me a break Sebastien. Even if a judge does decide on the outcome of this case, SCO's actions in all of this are nothing but 'infamous'. How can ANYONE justify a 3 *BILLION* dollar lawsuit along with charging Linux users thousands of dollars *AFTER* they've already spent the time and effort into incorporating it into their company.

It would be like someone handing you a copy of Windows and saying 'Here, this is free.' and since it appears genuine to you without looking at all the source code yourself, you happily use it. Until the day when Microsoft comes along and says, 'Hey, that's ours. You owe us. Pay or be sued.'

I don't care how you swing it, SCO's actions can *only* be defined as 'infamous'.

I know that this is a LINUX oriented news articles, but I must say it is tiring to hear such strong wording against SCO "infamous".

Im not a legal expert and I dont know whos right in this case, but until a judge decides, I dont think SCO deserve such harsh wording. After all, what if all that code was stolen from them?

Would the linux community do nothing if Microsoft steals GPL code and put it into Windows? Would the linux community be infamous to ask Microsoft to respect the GPL?

I hope that SCO claims are not substantiated, but I find it dangeourous when people are disrectfull of people defending their rights, weither that is pleasant or not.
