VERITAS and SuSE Join Forces to Ramp Up Enterprise Use of Linux

The $1.5 billion software powerhouse VERITAS - provider of data protection, storage management, high availability, and disaster recovery software to 99% of the Fortune 500 - has joined forces with SuSE Linux in a partnership aimed at eliminating many of the barriers for Linux deployment in enterprise data centers.

Mountain View, CA-based VERITAS will make its storage management and high availability software available on the SuSE LINUX Enterprise Server platform and is currently conducting a beta program for its SuSE LINUX products with customers in finance, banking, healthcare, government, and technical computing.

"Customers have made clear that they desire full, enterprise-class storage management solutions on Linux to help them face the pressures of lowering costs and meeting higher service levels," says Mark Bregman, executive vice president, product operations, VERITAS Software.

Since VERITAS's flagship Foundation Suite and Cluster Server software amount to the de facto standard in mission-critical Fortune 500 enterprise environments, Bregman adds that making them available for SuSE LINUX will provide customers "with the key building blocks to construct a highly available, scalable and performance-driven Linux infrastructure."

"The introduction of enterprise-oriented Linux distributions supports the transition in the Linux market identified by IDC, where customers are increasingly looking to Linux as a solution for database and application deployment," says IDC's research director, system software, Al Gillen.

In a press release the two companies announced that IBM and MySQL have announced support of the VERITAS and SuSE LINUX partnership - citing key benefits for customers who want to leverage Linux solutions to help reduce operational IT costs and simplify the management of complex storage environments.

Marten Mickos, CEO, MySQL AB, says: "Open source software is increasingly being used to solve high performance computing needs, across all industries, and now customers will benefit from increased choice for deploying MySQL applications with enterprise-level availability and performance on Linux."

The last word goes to Uwe Heine, chief alliance officer, SuSE LINUX: "We believe that this collaboration will vastly accelerate open source adoption in the data center," he says. "VERITAS products offer the tools SuSE customers are looking for," he adds, "to help bring the security, cost savings, and stability of Linux to their enterprise storage environment."

I'm sure that SuSE have conditions to do this. They have the best support to enterprise solutions. In my humble opinion this is a very good news to the network administrators in corporations, they will feel much more secure to work.
