Since Novell harbors publicly unarticulated ambitions for Linux-on-the-desktop, it is interesting to observe how Novell vice-chairman Chris Stone says that for Linux-on-the-desktop to succeed, "developers need a productive development environment, stable APIs and a well-defined technology roadmap." How ironic that Microsoft will have had a hand in creating it.
Novell, which admits that Mono's maturity is uneven, says Mono 1.1 will ship with different library profiles including compatibility with .NET 1.0, the incrementally updated .NET 1.1 and ECMA-specified profiles. It also says Mono will ship with a code generator that can be used in just-in-time or ahead-of-time modes. The code generator supports both the x86 and PowerPC architecture. Other architectures like Arm, Sparc, PA-RISC and the S/390 need an interpreter.
When Mono 1.2 gets out, theoretically late next year, it'll have libraries for building GUI-based apps as well as initial support for .NET 1.2 features and APIs, but mostly it'll be stuff that wasn't stable enough for 1.0. Mono 1.4 is supposed to follow in mid-2005 and Mono 2.0 in 2006.
Post-1.0 editions of Mono depend to a certain extent on Microsoft’s Whidbey release, or .NET Framework 2.0, due next year.
The Mono roadmap is very hazy about support for Longhorn's vaunted breakthroughs like its WinFS storage widgetry, Indigo communication stack and wizzy Avalon GUI programming system. Mono project leader Miguel de Icaza says it's too early to tell when these components might be available in Mono. Mono is also not going to support widgetry that'll be phased out in Longhorn like System.EnterpriseServices and System.Management.
