Fujitsu Siemens Says Its Opteron Box Is Ready

Fujitsu Siemens Says Its Opteron Box Is Ready

Back in April when AMD finally got to launch its hybrid x86-64 Opteron in New York, Fujitsu Siemens sent along a video clip saying it was going to do an Opteron workstation.

On Tuesday AMD got to say the Celsius V810 box, which uses the Opteron two-way 200 series, had arrived even if delivery is still a little hazy.

The German vendor will be chasing after compute-intensive applications such as digital content creation, now known as DCC, plus CAD, CAE and scientific and visualization software. The widget will run either Linux or Windows, though Microsoft is still working on a 64-bit rendition for the part.

Fujitsu Siemens quoted no price.

IBM, which has got an Opteron server, has suggested it too might field an Opteron workstation.

Meanwhile, in North America Fujitsu Computer Systems came out with a 64-bit Itanium 2 four-way dubbed the Primergy RX1600 that it says rounds out its high-end portfolio and peachy keen on databases. It'll start delivering in January.

Intel, which dropped the ball getting out the IA32 Execution Layer widgetry that's supposed to perk up the Itanium's desultory execution of 32-bit apps to help it ward off any market incursion by Opteron, says the stuff will be coming from Microsoft in 2004. Meanwhile, it points out that one can run one's entire infrastructure in 64-bit given the 64-bit Windows Server and SQL Server as well as 64-bit ERP software.

The 4U Fujitsu box, which carries a starting price tag of $23k, will also carry a maximum of 32 gigs of SDRAM, 438 gigs of disk, a SCSI on-board controller and PCI controller, eight hot-plug PCI-X slots and redundant and hot-plug fans and power supplies.
