LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Liferay Portal, the world's leading enterprise-class open source portal, was announced as a recipient of an InfoWorld Bossie Award in the enterprise application category for 2007. The Bossie Awards is an innovative recognition program focused on the best of open source software. InfoWorld selected companies that exemplified innovation, functionality, ease of use, implementation, and a proven track record in serving the needs of today's businesses.
"Open Source Software has moved into the mainstream," said Steve Fox, Editor in Chief at InfoWorld. "InfoWorld's inaugural Bossie Award winners represent mature, flexible, and reliable solutions that increasingly define the segment."
"We're delighted that InfoWorld has again recognized Liferay Portal's superior usability and enterprise-focused functionality and value," said Liferay CEO, Bryan Cheung. In January, InfoWorld named Liferay the Best Open Source Portal of 2007. Since then, Liferay's new 4.3.x releases have added to its list of capabilities targeting the enterprise market, which already includes a built-in content management system and full collaboration suite.
Most recently, a new Software Repository, the only one of its kind in the open source portal market, gives users the ability to easily install and update new portlets and themes with just one click without restarting the portal server. The repository also keeps track of version numbers and compatibility issues to reduce administration headaches. By communicating with remote servers, new functionality and content available both from Liferay and from third party sources can be discovered and installed with one click.
"The development cycle for software is getting shorter and shorter, and Web 2.0 properties in particular are in a state of perpetual beta," said Cheung. "The ability to quickly deploy new features into a production environment is key to a company or website attracting a critical mass of community members, the key competitive advantage of any social network. Liferay's new software repository helps ensure not only that the latest developments are available to our clients' platforms but that the management of those features is as painless as possible."
Liferay Portal is in its eighth year of development with over 60 portlets out-of-the-box. The latest version adds PHP and Ruby support. On the security side, enterprises can have single sign-on through Microsoft Active Directory or OpenID in addition to LDAP. There is also integration with Microsoft Exchange, an iCal calendar portlet, and full WebDAV support. For more information and an online demo, please visit http://www.liferay.com/.
