Novell has taken another open source project under its wing, and will be sponsoring a thing called Openswan, a six-year-old Linux implementation of the IP Security (IPsec) standard for sending sensitive information over unprotected networks such as the Internet.

IPsec underlies the most widely used corporate VPNs, and Openswan, which is based on the so-called FreeS/WAN code base, is reportedly in production on tens of thousands of Linux servers worldwide.

Openswan project manager Ken Bantoft was quoted as saying Novell's backing will ensure Openswan's maintenance and the development of new services.

Novell also says that its BorderManager 3.8 widgetry, which provides proxy-cache, VPN and firewall services, has passed the latest IPsec interoperability tests set by ICSA Labs and has gotten 1.0D certification. BorderManager supports connections from Linux, Windows and Mac clients. It's part of Novell's Nsure secure identity management solutions.
