The Open Source Development Labs, which says it’s got a mandate from its members and the Linux development community to make OSDL a leader in Linux testing, has upgraded its Scalable Test Platform (STP), which it uses to validate changes to the Linux kernel.

The stuff, which OSDL and the development community using during the transition phase from 2.5 to 2.6, works on a range of hardware and automatically tracks performance and quantifies stability.

It has reportedly been used to run 1,100 tests on the 2.6 kernel and is credited with helping deliver a stable release.

OSDL is advising people to add it to their test environment. It imagines it being used to test patches and company-specific Linux systems for stability and performance prior to production deployment.

The 3.0 rev simulates the impact of different workloads on widely used open source databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL and SAPDb.

It can be used to test the main kernel tree and sub-trees or changes to the kernel by uploading patches to a specific kernel tree, and requesting test or suite of tests to be run across a variety of server configs.
