VIA’s got a so-called OpenBook Mini-Note Reference Design and has open sourced the CAD files for the 2.2lb clamshell case design to push adoption of its 1GHz-1.6GHz C7 x86 chips and companion chipsets by reducing development costs and speeding time-to-market.

It’s using the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 license for the panel blueprints.

The inside design includes an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 screen, up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, 2-megapixel webcam and an 80 gig drive, with Wi-Fi, AGPS, Ethernet and Bluetooth standard. Options include WiMax, HSDPA, EV-DO and W-CDMA. A video processor will play HD movies.

It promises three hours of battery life.

Naturally the thing runs XP, Vista and Linux.

It should sell for $500-$800.
